Supply chains must be shortened and localised, urges FAO... Whilst addressing the Agriculture Ministers of the G20 countries, the FAO Director-General highlighted essential actions that must be taken in order to maintain the supply chains of the future. The COVID-19 pandemic is not only a major public health concern but also a threat to global food security, one that can be mitigated by avoiding measures that disrupt food supply chains, Director-General of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, told the Agriculture Ministers of the G20 countries. “Preserving access to safe food and nutrition is an essential part of the health response,” he said, recommending countries to strengthen local production and shorten food supply chains. “We need to collaborate with every actor in the supply chain, build public-private partnerships and promote innovation”, Dongyu said at the G20 meeting, convened by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which holds t...

Press release... Joint Statement by QU Dongyu, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Roberto Azevedo, Directors-General of FAO, WHO and WTO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, QU Dongyu and Roberto Azevedo, Directors-General of WHO, FAO and WTO. 31 March 2020, Rome/Geneva - Millions of people around the world depend on international trade for their food security and livelihoods. As countries move to enact measures aiming to halt the accelerating COVID-19 pandemic, care must be taken to minimise potential impacts on the food supply or unintended consequences on global trade and food security. When acting to protect the health and well-being of their citizens, countries should ensure that any trade-related measures do not disrupt the food supply chain. Such disruptions including hampering the movement of agricultural and food industry workers and extending border delays for food containers, result in the spoilage of perishables and increasing food waste. Food trade restrictions could also...

QU DONGYU: AGRICULTURE IS A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTOR TO DEFORESTATION

Image
FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) has called for transformational change aimed at addressing food security, agriculture and forestry. "It is possible to reconcile food security, agriculture production and forest conservation," said Qu Dongyu, FAO director-general at a dialogue on "turning the tide on deforestation" on the margins of COP25. To this end, FAO is working with countries to coordinate land use approaches across sectors, ensuring integrated management of forests and agriculture so that both food security and forestry objectives are met. Dongyu pointed out that a number of countries have managed to reduce the number of undernourished people and improve agricultural productivity while maintaining or increasing their forest area. Agriculture is a significant contributor to deforestation (over 70%), and with rising population and food demands, forests are increasingly under pressure. To address this, Dongyu put forward sol...
