GOOSE BREEDING APPEARS A NEW ALTERNATIVE FOR FARMERS AS DEMAND RISES...

Ufuk Karaçay (55), who produces goose breeding in Çıldır district of Ardahan (a northeastern province of Turkey), said that he could not meet the demand despite producing 15 thousand geese per year.

Stating that goose is a versatile animal that eats little, grows easily on its own and is a source of meat, eggs, feathers, fats and liver for its owners, Karaçay noted, "As such, geese have turned into very valuable assets from past to present."

Price of 15 day old chicks is 40 liras...

Karaçay, who also produces chickens, even small, besides the goose, explained, "I produce 15 thousand geese per year, with 400 breeder 100 male and 500 breeding geese per year. The demand is too high, I have difficulties in catching up. People of the village sell the geese that they bought from me 2-3 times the price they receive or cut them in the winter and meet their own meat needs. I feed the geese in organic feed and natural conditions. We sell up to 70 liras. This is very normal because these animals are very versatile animals that eat little, can grow easily on their own and are the source of meat, eggs, feathers, fats and liver for their owners. From now on they have become among the sine qua non for families who try to get on in rural areas."

Cost of breeding a goose is not much...

Ufuk Karaçay, who listed the advantages of having an goose, added, "Geese are large animals, depending on the type or sex of an adult goose, it varies between 4 and 13 kilograms. Another one is that the cost of growing a goose is not too much. Eats less than goose, chicken or duck. If you let the geese roam freely in nature, you will not need anything other than ordinary grass to feed them during the summer. You can use low-protein and more affordable cereals such as oat grains with cobs. One of the advantages of geese is that they can stay healthy and long-lasting. It is enough to get a mature goose at least 2 years old to raise a flock of geese. You can start slowly expanding your herd by transferring the activity to nature to a large extent."
