TURKEY COMPETES WITH SPAIN IN TERMS OF GREENHOUSES WHETHER SIZE OR PRODUCTION...


As of the world agricultural output, Turkey ranks 7th and 1st in Europe while in greenhouse cultivation competes with Spain as 4th in the world.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, greenhousing first emerged in Antalya region during 1940's and began to spread all over Turkey mostly between 1975-1985.

Over the last 10 years, the average greenhouse business size has increased from 2 decares to 4 decares. As of the end of 2018 the total greenhouse presence of Turkey has reached 772 thousand 91 decares.

China, with about 2 million 700 thousand hectares of greenhouse space, takes the first place, second place in South Korea and followed by Spain and Turkey. In Turkey, 46 percent of the greenhouse consists of plastic greenhouses. The remaining 24 percent are low tunnels, 17 are high tunnels, 13 percent are glass greenhouses.

Among all Turkish provinces Antalya is in the first place in undercover production with 3.8 million tons with 47 percent, Mersin is second with 20 percent and 1.6 million tons, Adana is third with 12 percent and 970 thousand tons and Muğla is 657 thousans ton with 8 percent.

This 4 total greenhouse production in these provinces accounted for nearly 87 percent of production in Turkey with approximately 7 million tons. Turkey's greenhouse vegetable production value comes to about 10 billion liras.

14 percent of cucumber,
11 percent of watermelon,
9 percent of pepper,
4 percent of eggplant,
4 percent of banana,
3 percent of pumpkin,
2 percent of melon,
2 percent of strawberry,
3 percent of other vegetables and fruits

cultivated in greenhouses across Turkey.

On the other hand, according to Turkstat data, 7 million 535 thousand 511 tons of vegetable production, 535 thousand 515 tons of fruit production, 1 billion 211 million 202 thousand 223 units of ornamental plants production was recorded as undercover...
