HIGH YIELD OF OKRA BOOSTING PRODUCTION IN OSMANİYE...

Osmaniye Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Sağlam said that despite its exhausting harvest, okra is one of the highest yielding alternative products.

Sağlam said that a decare area planted okra's turnover of about 10 thousand liras.

After deduction of the cost which is around 5 thousand liras, the rest is farmer's earnings.

"Our province ranks 4th across Turkey"

Sağlam also noted that 200-250 decares of okra cultivation during 2010 - 2011 raised to 2 thousand 595 decares in 2019.

"Okra agriculture was unknown in our region but today we rank the 4th after Balıkesir, Izmir and Amasya in Turkey. Total production was about 700-750 kilograms per decare ten years ago. Today we can take between 1000 to 1200 kilograms per decare. Okra agriculture is very closely related to human labor. A crop that needs to be harvested every two or three days. It is planted on the 15th of March and harvest starts at the end of May. It can be harvested for 5 months until November" Sağlam stated.

Because of not requiring fertilizer it does not exhaust the soil...

Stating that okra provides 20-25 million liras contribution to the economy of Osmaniye, Sağlam concluded, "At the same time, we send okras to provinces of Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Hatay and Adana. In terms of labour, a good alternative product in flat lands. The retail price is between 8-10 liras. This provides a return of 4-5 thousand liras. You can hardly find such a product. Furthermore it does not exhaust the soil since does not require fertilizer."
