According to Household Budget Survey based on the results of the Turkey Statistical Institute, food and non-alcoholic beverages made up 20.3 percent of total consumption expenditures in 2018.
While meat, fish and seafood gets the biggest share from food and non-alcoholic beverages category,
bread and cereals with 17.5 percent, vegetables with 15.9 percent, milk, cheese and eggs followed with 13.8 percent. Expenditure groups with the lowest share were other food products with 2.2 percent, coffee, tea and cocoa with 3.2 percent, and soft drinks with 3.9 percent.
According to the results of the study, while the share of food and beverages in the total consumption expenditures of the households with the lowest income of 20 percent was 28.7 percent, the households in the highest income with 20 percent allocated 15.4 percent of their total expenditures to food and non-alcoholic beverages. .
19.7 percent of the total food expenditures of the households in the 20 percent group with the lowest income were bread and cereals, 18.9 percent vegetables and 16.9 percent meat, fish and seafood.
In the households with the highest 20 percent income, 25 percent of total food expenditures were meat, fish and seafood, 15.1 percent bread and cereals, and 13.7 percent milk, cheese and eggs.
