PROF. DR. MUHİTTİN ÖZDER: NO REDUCTION IN MILK PRODUCTION CAPACITY DUE TO COVID-19 ACROSS TURKEY
National Dairy Council (USK) Chairman Prof. Dr. Muhittin Özder, stating that there is no reduction in milk production capacity since the outbreak a novel of coronavirus (Covid-19) across Turkey and said, "On the other hand we are about to get into a new term in which production will increase due to seasonality reasons."
Özder explained that the sector is in a position to meet the demand in milk and dairy products and emphasized that farmers continue to produce raw milk and industrial sector producing dairy products work in this regard.
Özder also pointed out that it is one of the most important duties to follow the market continuously as USK.
"There has not been any decrease in the milk producers' production capacity since the first day of the Covid-19 outbreak. We clearly see the stability in the raw milk supply and raw milk quantities collected by our dairy industrialists on a daily basis," Özder noted.
On the other hand, remembering the dairy industry is not working at full capacity even now, Özder cited that the dairy sector has the power to easily meet possible demand increases.
Underlining that there is no situation that would require citizens to stock up, Özder said:
"Rising in demand, no firm in our sector shows a price increase reflex. The demand for dairy products is increasing and decreasing under certain conditions of the year, such as festive periods, summer months. Our dairy industry is accustomed to this kind of demand fluctuations. We observe that the demand for dairy products, especially UHT milk and cheddar cheese, has soared recently. Despite this surge in demand, there is no price increase in milk and dairy products."
"Prefer packaged products for hygiene"
Stressing the importance of hygiene to protect from the epidemic, Özder concluded that citizens should prefer packaged products in milk and dairy products; besides should avoid to consume street milks which carry high risks in this period particularly.
