April 29, 2020
While Coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic enhances the awareness concerning nature destructions of which the cause of climate changes, Paris Climate Agreement, signed by Turkey in 2016, can not enter into force for not has been adopted in Parliament.
Turkey who inked the agreement in 2015 so as to minimize the impacts of global warming retains the distinction of being one of 10 countries still not approved in the Parliament.
Energy Industrialists and Businessmen Association (ENSİA) Chairman Hüseyin Vatansever, in his written statement, said, "The Covid-19 epidemic is not just a disease. We don't just have a virus outbreak. We witness the revenge of our old world and nature from human beings. This pandemic teaches all of us the importance of producing energy by being humanity and environment friendly."
Open call to political parties...
Underlining that Turkey is required to give more significance to renewable and clean energy sources in energy production, Vatansever said that they made an open call to all political parties in order to the endorsement of Paris Climate Agreement in Turkey Grand National Assembly (TBMM).
Reminding that the agreement aims to increase global socio-economic resilience against climate change in 2020 and beyond, Vatansever made the following assessment:
"This important agreement aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 56 billion tons by 2030, thereby keeping the global temperature rise below 2 degrees by the end of the century. With the agreement, it is targeted for the countries to turn to renewable energy by reducing the use of fossil fuels. Our country, which signed this agreement with representatives of 175 countries in New York on April 22, 2016, has not been running the approval mechanism in the Turkish Grand National Assembly for four years. Unfortunately we are the only country within G20 countries that has not ratified the Paris Agreement."
