ŞEMSİ BAYRAKTAR: ALL FARMERS AND FARM WORKERS SHOULD BE EXEMPT FROM THE CURFEW

Press release...

Ankara, April 15, 2020

Şemsi Bayraktar, Union of Turkish Agricultural Chambers President, held a press conference in Ankara and said that not only those working in the harvest, all farmers and farm workers should be exempt from the curfew in force for weekends.

Pointing out that agricultural activities continue intensively, Bayraktar said, “Our farmer performs harvesting, fertilizing, planting seedlings, hoeing, irrigation, spraying, and misfire. All these works must be done without wasting time. Exempting our farmers from curfew is very important for agricultural production."

“Food production should continue under all conditions”

Emphasizing that even one day is very valuable in the production process, Bayraktar stated, “There is no prohibition, vacation or holiday in agriculture, including Saturday and Sunday. Food production should continue under all conditions. The safety of our farmers and agricultural workers should be prioritized and they should continue to produce by following the social distancing rule."

Underlining that there is no point in continuing the harvest unless the marketing problem is resolved, Bayraktar concluded, "Municipalities and stallholder artisans determined by the municipalities can be provided to sell in the districts on mobile. Our farmers should be supported in order to prevent food supply from being interrupted and the agricultural sector should not be neglected while making decisions."
